Recently Victoria University (aka Victoria College at university of Toronto) announced it was ending its co-operation with the United Church Archives. This means that the United Church Archives must move and find new funding if it is to continue operating. As of now it will close to the public the end of 2007, and staff will be laid off in April 2008. The United Church archives is where much of the early missionary history of the Presbyterian Mission in Taiwan is stored, including the letters of George Leslie Mackay. The Association of Canadian Archivists is now asking people to write letters in support of he Archives. Detailed information including addresses for letters, is on their website: http://www.archivists.ca/special_interest/UnitedChurchAdvocacy.aspxIt is important now that the United Church know how important these archives are to international scholarly research, and especially how important they are as the holders of one of the national treasures of Taiwan and the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. Please write a letter!Michael Stainton Secretary, Canadian Mackay CommitteeMichael Stainton York Centre for Asian Research 270 York Lanes, York University Toronto, Canada M3J 1P3 Tel: 416-736-2100 x33068 Fax: 416-736-5688===================================================

Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2007 11:16:54 -0600 From: Scott Goodine Dear archival colleagues,ACA has received an official response from Nora Sanders, General Council for the United Church of Canada concerning the future of the United Church of Canada's archives as well as the archives of the five conferences held at Victoria University (Toronto). We have added Ms. Sanders' letter, with permission, to the advocacy page on ACA's website http://www.archivists.ca/special_interest/UnitedChurchAdvocacy.aspxIt is apparent from the letter that the United Church does recognize the value of its archives and that it is sensitive to public commentary on the topic of the archives' future. However, no further information on future plans for staffing, a site, or access to the records was included in the response. As this issue is still very much undecided, ACA will continue to advocate on this issue and I would encourage members- especially any affiliated with the United Church- to continue speaking out and writing letters on this topic. Best regards, Scott Goodine President, Association of Canadian Archivists
