Friends for a Nuclear-Free Future, Greetings! Foreign residents in Taiwan are organizing a signature drive for a Statement (below) to appear in the Sunday editions of the English daily papers. Time is urgent, so we would appreciate your circulating this among your friends without delay. Passing this message on to people outside Taiwan is encouraged, so that (1) they may know what we are doing, and (2) they may in turn pass it on to other friends in Taiwan. The statement appears at the bottom of this message, but please read the following first. Although many of us are very concerned about the threat to democracy seen in the recent drive to recall President Chen Shui-bian for his decision to cancel the nuclear power plant, we have decided to keep clear of the political issues and keep the message simple and to the point. Taipower and the Atomic Energy Commission are forever touting the safety of nuclear power, citing foreign examples in support. We wish to counter their lies, and let the Taiwan public know that in fact the anti-nuclear current runs every bit as strongly amongus as it does here. The Thursday midnight deadline is for signatures to appear on the message ads that will appear in the Taiwan News, Taipei Times and China Post. We must organize the names alphabetically and submit them to the papers by Friday noon. However, if you miss that deadline, you are still encouraged to submit by Saturday midnight , in time for us to organize a larger listing, to be presented to the Chinese-language media at a press conference that is tentatively being scheduled for Sunday morning, November12, the day of the mass rally. There is also talk, funds permitting, of an ad to appear later in one or more of the major Chinese-language dailies. This is restricted to foreigners presently residing in Taiwan. All ages are welcome. If you are Taiwan-born, that makes no difference, so long as you are here on a foreign passport. JOIN US FOR THE RALLY 11/12 (Sun) 13:00: Signers and non-signers alike are invited to join the rally and march as a contingent of foreign residents. We hope to have a banner prepared by then, saying simply "We Are All Together." !Over 100 Taiwanese organizations will hold a mass rally in support of the cancellation of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant. South Road, across the street from the CKS Memorial). Please join us, and bring your family and friends! Updates concerning the Statement, the press conference (if held), and the foreign contingent's participation can be found at Taiwan Watch's English page set up expressly for this purpose: http://www.taiwanwatch.org.tw/english/ . You can submit your signature by filling in the information in the form at the bottom of this message and cutting and pasting the whole content into a message addressed to Taiwan Watch at , but by far the easier way (both for you and us) is to use the form at http://www.taiwanwatch.org.tw/english/join891112.htm. This campaign is coordinated by Taiwan Watch, which is a registered Taiwanese NGO. Additional information is also vailable on the web at the above address. Taiwan Watch Contact Information

WE ARE ALL TOGETHER Canceling the 4th Nuclear Power Plant is the Sensible Approach Statement by Foreign Residents of Taiwan
12 November 2000 Citizens of other countries, we live in Taiwan and trust our Taiwanese hosts to provide a safe environment for all. As foreigners, it is not for us to interfere in Taiwan's domestic affairs. But as citizens of the Global Village we must speak out when we see Taiwan's environment, as well as that of her neighbors, threatened. Should a Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, or Tokaimura incident happen here, there would be no place to hide. Segregating nuclear waste from the livable habitat for thousands of generations is a problem yet to be overcome in any country, certainly including Taiwan. On the electrical supply side, we are confident in the Ministry of Economic Affairs' thorough investigation, and we believe that the alternatives to nuclear power are not only viable but are in fact the sensible approach to sustainable economic development for Taiwan. SIGN THE PETITION!! NOTE: This petition is open strictly to residents of Taiwan, of all ages. If you do not live in Taiwan, please do not fill it out. Family Name:
