Last night was a very satisfying win for Team Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), as the local team beat a talented Nicaraguan squad 4-2 in Kaohsiung.

Taiwan handily defeated Italy in the opening game of the 34th Baseball World Series on Tuesday, and then went on to skewer France on Thursday 10-0 in a "skunk" shortened contest (wherein a game is called if a deficit is seen as insurmountable).

However, yesterday's win over Nicaragua was all the more satisfying for Taiwan because it remained close throughout, and the opposition put up exactly that â opposition â for nine solid innings.

The heroics for the second straight day came off the white hot bat of Taiwan's Chang Tai-shan, whose solo shot in the third gave Taiwan an important insurance run. On Thursday, Chang went yard for a three run shot.

Taiwan batters came out swinging in the top of the first inning, bring round three runners on three hits. But Nicaragua showed true grit by cutting Taiwan's lead to 3-2 off Taiwan starter Sung Chao-chi in the second.

With runners on second and third, and the battery of Sung and Hong Yi-chung showing obvious frustration, Taiwan skipper Lin Hua-wei decided to stop the bleeding early and waved in 23-year old pitcher Chen Jung-chao from the bullpen.

The decision was critical as the young middle reliever closed the floodgates. Nicaragua would not score again in the game.

Chang's solo homer a few minutes later gave Chen and the late Team Taiwan relief comfortable breathing room.

Nicaragua stayed close throughout though, keeping Taiwan off the scoreboard after the third inning thanks to strong showings by four different relievers. Taiwan batters drew eight walks in the game, many intentional in an attempt by Nicaragua to turn double plays.

The win puts Taiwan at 3-0, tied atop Group A with Dominica. Today, Taiwan can let their guard down a bit as they take on South Africa (0-3) in Kaohsiung at noon.
