The region needs to be more united than ever now that the world is mired in a global economic downturn and fallout from the September terror attacks in the United States, said Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah who chaired the one-day Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.

But the challenges offered ASEAN the opportunity to strengthen competitiveness and accelerate regional integration. The leaders of the 10-nation ASEAN agreed at their summit to proceed with the proposed US$2.5 billion trans-ASEAN railway link, as well as other mega infrastructure projects in areas such as energy, gas and telecommunications.
