ASEAN wants fast track to regional integration

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) embarked Monday on far-reaching plans to urgently push economic cooperation beyond existing commitments to counter a climate of global uncertainty.

The raft of proposals under consideration includes a giant free trade zone covering the 10 ASEAN members plus mainland China, Japan and South Korea, a combined market of more than two billion people.

The region needs to be more united than ever now that the world is mired in a global economic downturn and fallout from the September terror attacks in the United States, said Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah who chaired the one-day Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.

The 5,500-kilometer (3,437-mile) railway stretching from Singapore to Kunming in southern China, which will also include spur lines, is now "a priority project," the sultan said.
