"Chekgiau [Tze-Yau] William Ng [Huang]" hou taigu-bang e phoe:

Andy,

[ Chit-tiunn-phoe si iu-koan Berkeley Taigu ko-teng e Engbun phoe. ]

I am glad to hear that the Taiwanese language class is still carrying on
even though it is a student-led course which does not afford students
letter grades.

I have not personally involved in the official class petition after George
Yeh and I founded the class. Several subsequent class coordinators tried
but I think the main barrier is the lack of a faculty champion of the
Taiwanese Hoklo language in the East Asian Language Department. Resources
may be another issue. The first faculty we worked with, Samuel Cheung,
came from Hong Kong. He was interested to see if he can start a Cantonese
class following our model but I assume he has not even started a
student-led Cantonese class.

Many important East Asian languages are not taught at Berkeley for many
different reasons. Elevating Taiwanese to rank of the officially taught
languages at Berkeley is still a worthy cause, but keeping the opportunity
of learning Taiwanese we have now is even more important.

Best regards,

Chekgiau William Ng
