A public works project is launched in Cap-Haitien to restore Saint-Victor Park financed by the Republic of Taiwan in the amount of $2.6 million (U.S.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cap-Haitien, June 28, 2005 (AHP)- Mr. Paul Berne, State Secretary for Youth, Sports and Civic Services, presided Saturday over the launch of work to restore Saint-Victor Park in Cap-Haïtien.

Mr. Berne was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Haiti, Yan Chang Ta.

The restoration work is being financed through a non-reimbursable gift to Haiti from the Republic of China in Taipei as part of a larger project funded at the level of $2.6 million.

These funds will serve both to restore the Cap-Haitien soccer stadium as well as stadiums in Saint-Marc and Gonaïves.

At the ceremony launching the restoration work, Paul Berne sought the collaboration of partners of the Secretariat of State in the establishment of basic infrastructure, training of managers and drafting of legislation relating to sports.

Mr. Berne reminded attendees at the launch ceremony that the central government has just disbursed the second portion of its package of subsidies for activities related to sports, such as support for federations and clubs.

The Taiwanese Ambassador to Haiti, Yang Chang Ta, declared in his remarks that these projects will significantly help to expand sports activities in the North of Haiti, thus promoting peace and helping to create a favorable social environment.

Some local residents said on this occasion that they hope they will be hired to work on the renovation projects being undertaken by the Taiwanese contractor, OECC.
