First International Conference on the

Written Representation of Chinese Dialects

The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University announces it will sponsor the First International Conference on the Written Representation of Chinese Dialects __ to be held on the university campus in Tsimshatsui, Kowloon from 21-22 June 2002.__ With this First Circular the Organizing Committee invites scholars to present papers at the conference. The rationale underlying the conference is that as written representations of Chinese dialects become increasingly prevalent in economically advanced regions of China where dialects are popular, they have also been attracting scholarly attention. The scope of the conference includes (but is not limited to) such topics as: all aspects of Chinese dialectal characters, i.e., etymology, competing variant forms, popular use, domains of use, principles underlying their creation, etc.; romanization and phoneticization of Chinese dialects; sociology of written representations of Chinese dialects; interaction between dialectal scripts and standard Chinese script; relationship between general graphology and written representationsof Chinese dialects. The languages of the conference will be Putonghua and English. Submission of Abstracts: Abstracts should be no more than one A4 page in length, formatted in 12-point font, and written in either Chinese or English (and additionally in any Chinese dialect if the author so chooses).
